First, let's figure out what kusudama is, where this term came from and what it means. Kusudama is a paper spherical figure, as well as a type of origami, it is made from several identical origami figures that are glued together. Kusudama is also the predecessor of modular origami. This term came to us from Japan. And initially it meant a medicinal ball; the Japanese placed medicinal herbs in it and hung it over the patient’s bed. This ball also served as a storage for incense and aromatic mixtures of dried herbs and petals. But now these balls are called happiness balls, and they are used as home decor or are an excellent decoration for weddings, birthdays and any other occasion. Kusudama can also serve as a gift for family and friends for any occasion. Therefore, we propose to make origami kusudama together.
First, we suggest you look at the image of this figure, since it comes in different sizes, shapes and colors.
There is also an opinion that kusudama is not a type of origami, since it is made using many parts with the participation of glue and scissors, while others, on the contrary, believe that this is precisely a type of origami, since earlier this art also involved the participation of scissors and glue.
To begin with, we suggest you make one of the easiest types of this craft to get acquainted with this figure. This will be a kusudama flower, and we offer you a diagram for assembling this figure. This is what all the elements of this figure will look like, which will then need to be glued together and shaped into a ball.
To work, we need 60 square sheets of paper measuring 7/7 cm and PVA glue. From this amount of paper we should get 12 flowers, which will consist of five such shapes.
We bend our square sheet of paper so that we end up with a triangle.
Now we bend the corners of the triangle to the top point and get a rhombus.
Then fold the previously folded sides in half.
Now we need to bend the upper corners of those sides that we folded so that they are equal to the main figure.
We bend both sides in half and glue the resulting triangles together.
And now we need to make 5 of the same petals and glue them together to make a flower.
You can watch the video for more detailed information and find out the answers to all your questions:
Now, in order to get a ball from these twelve colors, we need a few more minutes.
For this work we need glue, lace or a beautiful ribbon and beads for decoration.
Let's take 6 flowers, place one of them in the middle, and glue the other five around the central flower.
Now we will glue the flowers together, we will apply glue little by little, starting to the right of the center fold line.
When the glue sets well, we move on to gluing the next flower.
Glue it very carefully, first the first six colors, and then we get one hemisphere, and then the remaining six and we get the second hemisphere. By themselves, they look very beautiful and can already serve as a decorative item. But still, let's finish our figure.
Now let's design a lace or ribbon, depending on what you choose, on which the kusudama will be held. To do this, take beads and string them onto a cord. We tie the first and last beads with a knot to hold them in place.
All we have to do is connect the elements of our future ball; to do this we need to apply a small amount of glue inside the fold.
Then we glue the lace to the upper and lower petals, but the glue should be applied exactly in the center of the petal. We will glue the second part of the ball when the glue on the first one dries.
Well, that's all, our kusudama ball is ready. You can hang it above your bed, in your living room, or use it as holiday decor. It will also make a great gift.
You can also watch a video on how to correctly assemble this ball.
There are many models of kusudama in the world. And this kusudama resembles a three-dimensional star.
In order to make such a ball, we will need 30 square sheets of paper measuring 7/7 cm, they can be of different colors, then the figure will come out more beautiful, scissors and glue.
We present you a video that describes in detail how to make such a ball.
The magic ball is a little different from kusudama, since it is made from one sheet of paper, but you will have to invest a lot of effort and patience. Because for this we will need to make several hundred folds and folds. But in the end you won’t regret how much you worked, as you will end up with an original toy, gift and decor.
For this craft, take a sheet of paper measuring 15/30 cm. Let's watch the video to learn how to make such a beautiful figure.
And now we present to you another selection of videos, thanks to which you will learn how to make other kusudama balls.
The ancient Japanese art of origami is distinguished by its special grace. Folding paper figures is based only on the design features of the material; scissors are not used in the craft. Kusudama flower balls made from modules are one of the directions of origami. The assembly of spherical flowers into kusudama is made from individual parts of one or several types: flowers, rosettes, stars, etc. The Japanese attribute to flower kusudama the property of harmonizing the surrounding space. Modern science finds a certain reason for this: after all, there is an assumption about the harmonious and disharmonious influence of the shape of objects on living organisms. Moreover, the ball among all nations is the main symbol of the Sun and the infinity of the world.
The kusudama flower ball consists of several dozen modules made up of basic squares. Folding kusudama paper flowers requires considerable time, especially since folding many types of modules is a complex task, involving at least a dozen operations. This lesson will introduce you to making kusudama flowers at an average level of complexity.
You will need:
The size of the “Fruit and Berry Sherbet” kusudama, which is what this craft in pastel colors is called, is 15 cm in diameter when assembled.
Kusudama is usually hung on a thread or decorative cord and attached to the ceiling, lamp, or curtains. You can make many types of kusudama flowers with your own hands.
The days have become longer. There is already a whiff of spring in the air. The sun is warmer than in winter. Together with the end of the cold season, we are looking forward to the holiday on March 8th. Our eyes can be pleased with decorative elements made by ourselves. Today we present to your attention a master class on making a flower ball on a thread basis.
To make a flower ball, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:
1. For the ball:
2. For flowers:
1. Thread ball base
Let's inflate the balloon so that it takes on a round shape of the desired size (in our case, ≈ 20 cm in diameter). Let's tie it up carefully.
Cover the ball with a thin layer of cream. This will help you easily separate it from the threads later. Pull a cotton thread through the eye of a darning needle, and then through a jar of glue in PVA (at the very bottom of the bottle).
Now we wind the thread, saturated with glue, in a random order around the ball (vertically, diagonally, horizontally, often changing direction).
When the ball acquires a thread cocoon, we cut the thread, securing its end at the base. Our base should dry well. Drying time varies - from 3 hours to a day.
If the strings become stiff, it's time to remove the balloon. We carefully untied it and deflated it little by little. Thanks to the cream, the ball came out easily. And we were able to use it a couple more times for thread base.
2. Corrugated paper flowers
Cut the colored corrugated paper into strips about 10 cm wide.
Fold each strip in half lengthwise.
We wrap the end towards ourselves twice at an acute angle.
Holding the left part, carefully turn the wrapped part away from you with the fingers of your right hand, as if wrapping a candy wrapper.
Again, fold the left side of the strip toward you, and then twist the right side away from you.
We will make such waves along the entire length of the color stripe.
Let's turn the curved strip over and begin to twist the flower, gradually turning the “petals” horizontally. We wrap the assembled flower with regular thread and tighten it well. Leaving 3-4 mm for the leg, cut off the excess.
3. Corrugated paper leaves
Fold the green paper into a 10*10 cm square.
From this blank we will cut out leaves.
We'll make a small slit in the center.
We will dress the flower in a frame of leaves. Wrap the thread again, pulling it tightly at the base of the flower. We'll cut off the excess.
4. Flower ball - assembly
At our discretion, glue the flowers onto the thread base using a glue gun.
A flower ball made of corrugated paper and thread is ready.

If you are still a complete beginner in kusudama collecting, then you should practice your skills on simple models. One of these is a paper ball made of flowers. This craft will be a bright and original decoration for the New Year tree, festive banquet and other important life events, and it is relatively easy to make, much easier than many other paper balls.
To make a ball of paper flowers using the kusudama technique, we will need 60 paper squares 9x9cm (or other size) and glue.
Step 1. Blank from one square
Bend the sheet diagonally
Then we fold the left and right corners of the resulting triangle to the vertex to form a rhombus
Fold the corners to the edges of the diamond
Open the pockets and smooth them out
Bend the corners of the pockets towards you
Fold the pockets in half
Step 2. We will need 60 pieces of such blanks (30 of one color and 30 of another)
Step 3. Gluing the petals:
Step 4. Gluing flowers:
In total you should get 6 flowers of one color and 6 flowers of another color.
As the New Year approaches, every family strives to create a festive atmosphere in their home. And the main attribute of the holiday is a decorated Christmas tree. You can buy Christmas tree decorations in the store or make them yourself from scrap materials. Such New Year's crafts look very beautiful and original. One of the best ways to decorate an evergreen beauty is with origami paper balls.
Currently, there are a large number of origami schemes. Some of the most unusual are magic origami paper balls. It is from the simple transformation of a sheet of paper into interesting figures that one begins to become familiar with the origami technique. Balls made using the kusudama technique are a real work of art, as their perfect shape attracts the attention of many people.
Thanks to the abundance of color options, they can easily become decorations for the New Year tree or an extraordinary gift for loved ones. Also very popular is the modular 3D origami technique, in which a whole figure is assembled from many identical parts (models).
To fold each module, one sheet of paper and the rules of classic origami are used. Due to friction, the modules are held together. Making simple origami involves folding paper shapes using mountain and valley folds.
Another technique is unfolded folding., that is, a drawing depicting all the folds of the finished model. Wet folding is also very popular, in the process of using paper moistened with water. It allows you to make smooth and expressive lines.
Origami paper ball: module diagram
To make your own simple paper ball, you need:
You need to take prepared paper sheets and cut out circles from them. To make a ball you will need 32 circles with a diameter of 10 cm: 16 blue and 16 red. Each resulting circle should be folded in half. And then you can start gluing the parts together. To do this, you need to apply glue to the upper outer half of the blue circle and glue it to the lower outer part of the red element. In the same way, you need to glue all the parts together, alternating colors: red-blue-red-blue. The result will be a stack of semicircular leaves glued together, reminiscent of a book.
After this, you should expand the figure and proceed to the next step - gluing colorful pages of the ball together. Pages of different colors should be connected in different patterns. The red ones need to be glued together like this: open the red circle and mentally divide it into 6 parts. The upper and lower parts of the left semicircle need to be greased with glue, as shown in the picture, and the middle one should be left untouched. Next you need to connect them with the first and third parts of the right semicircle. After the glue dries, you will get something similar to a “pocket”. Similarly, connect all the red “pages” of the paper ball.
Then you need to start gluing the blue “pages”. To do this, you need to unfold one of the blue circles and apply glue to the most protruding part (the second) of the left semicircle (marked with a cross in the figure). Next, connect to the symmetrically located part of the right blue semicircle. The same should be done with all blue “pages”.
Then you need to fold the ball blank into a “book” again and wait for the glue to dry completely. Now you need to fan out the craft and check that all the “pages” are glued together correctly. Then you should insert a loop of thread and connect the first and last “pages” of the “book” with glue, forming a three-dimensional ball. That's all, the blue ball with a red core is ready.
By changing the place where the multi-colored “pages” are glued together, you can get a variety of paper shapes. This ball model can be used as a basis for making Christmas tree decorations and garlands.
If you wish to do paper balloon that looks like a flower, then you need to prepare:
You need to take the paper and fold it like an accordion or into a roll. It is worth noting that the thicker the roll, the more petals you will get and the more voluminous the ball will be. Then you need to fasten the accordion in the center with thread or wire and cut both end sides of the accordion in the shape of petals, and then carefully unfold them. In conclusion, you just need to spread the petals in different directions to get a voluminous craft.
To make a paper flower arrangement in the shape of a ball, you need to prepare:
If you want to use a ball to decorate a New Year tree, then approximately in the middle of the stage of fastening the flower modules you need attach a cord inside for hanging.
Using a similar scheme, you need to prepare 11 more flower elements and beautifully glue them together. The flower origami paper ball is ready.
To create a ball, it is better to use double-sided colored paper: this way the New Year’s origami will turn out bright and beautiful. The paper size can be any depending on the desired size of the ball. You will also need glue to assemble the parts together. Manufacturing technology:
Using step-by-step instructions and origami diagrams, you can make DIY magic Christmas balls.
Attention, TODAY only!
In this master class I will tell you how to make a flower ball out of paper. Plus, I selected detailed photographs for each step of the process. With such products it is very original to decorate the interior for a holiday or just for no reason.
It’s very simple to make, the main thing is to prepare the necessary materials, namely:
Start making flower balls from corrugated paper by creating flowers. To do this, first fold the paper into several layers in a strip and draw circles on it.
Now carefully cut them out and put them together in at least ten circles and secure them with a clothespin for convenience.
The more layers, the more magnificent the future flower will turn out. Next, in the middle of each group of circles we pierce two holes at a distance of about a centimeter from each other.
We bend the wire into a hairpin shape and push it through the prepared holes.
On the other side we twist it well.
Now we fluff the flower as shown in the picture.
First of all, we stick a loop into the foam base and insert a ribbon into it so that the ball can be hung. Next, we begin to fill the foam base with prepared flowers over the entire area, alternating different shades of flowers.
This is how you get beautiful DIY paper balls that will magically decorate any interior.
Photos taken from the Internet. Unfortunately, it was not possible to determine their author. In any case, thanks to the author for the idea.
