When and how is Arafat celebrated? The Day of Arafah is the most valuable day of the year

This year 2017, Muslim holidays are presented in the Islamic Hijri calendar for each month, with the days of celebrations, which you will find below on the page.

It is important to know why there are so few holidays in the Muslim calendar, and all because at one time the Prophet Muhammad did not allow his followers to celebrate non-Muslim holidays, take part in them and count them among the holidays of Islam.

When a devout Muslim takes part in a religious Islamic holiday, he thereby joins the ritual of his religion, which he practices, honors and which completely suits him.

What holiday do Muslims have in 2017 - what are they by month?

Around that time, Muslims began to have two great holidays at once - Breaking the fast (Eid al-Adha), which begins immediately after the fast of Ramadan, and Sacrifice (Eid al-Fitr), marked by the end of the Hajj (the pilgrimage of devout Muslims to pray and worship shrines to Islamic Mecca).

Initially, other Muslim dates were not taken into account and were considered significant Islamic holidays. Therefore, there were no ceremonial events on their occasion.

At the same time, it is worth noting that at approximately the same time, special places were allocated in the Muslim calendar for such solemn days as:

- Juma - Namaz (Friday prayer for devout Muslims) is one of the most favorite days of the week for Muslims, and Juma begins after sunset on Thursday and continues until sunset on Friday.

— The Day of Ashura is a day of mourning, remembrance and voluntary fasting.

— Arafat Day is the last day of Hajj (Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca), when the faithful visit the holy Mount Arafat and perform namaz prayer there.

- Night of Predestination - on this night they read the Koran, pray and ask for forgiveness for their sins

These holidays for the Muslim world were not intended as a time for fun, but as days for diligent worship of the Lord God.

All other festivals in Islam are considered memorial dates.

Which is quite unusual, although not at all surprising - given the orientation of the Islamic religion, the attitude of Muslims to celebrating holidays is not at all familiar to, for example, Christians or Catholics.

If for some people who profess a religion other than Islam, some religious holiday is considered a reason to have fun and take a break from everyday life, then for Muslims any celebration is just another reason to increase their good deeds, which, according to the faith of Islam, will be credited to them on the Day of Judgment, compared with their bad deeds and deeds.

Days of celebration of some holidays among Muslims give them an extra incentive to worship Allah more diligently. So, residents of Muslim countries, on sacred days and nights for them, read certain prayers of the Koran and perform ritual prayers, and they also strive to please their loved ones and relatives, relatives and even strangers.

It is customary among devout Muslims on the days of celebrating some triumph of Islam to visit each other, invite guests to their home, set a rich table, give donations to those in need of help, and give gifts.

Religious Muslim holidays in 2017 will be celebrated according to the lunar Islamic calendar and in strict accordance with the Hijri. Due to the fact that Islamic holidays are “tied” to the Lunar calendar, they shift by about 11 days every year.

It should be noted that initially the word “Hijra” meant a pilgrimage-journey from Mecca to Medina.

The year of the end of the Hijra became the first in Muslim chronology, and it was from that moment that the modern history of Islam began.

It is also important to remember that the day in the Islamic calendar is counted not from the moment of sunrise, but from its sunset.

Thus, the night of the new day for Muslims is the previous day.

Navruz in 2017 - March 21

Navruz cannot be called a religious holiday - it is rather a folk holiday and is dedicated to the spring equinox. Usually people on this day remembered the deceased, in addition, on Navruz Zoroastrians worshiped the forces of fire, which in turn was considered life energy, thus sent to us by the sky.

Date of Navruz holiday in 2017

Every year it is the same and does not differ from previous ones, and therefore Navruz in 2017 is celebrated on March 21. Over the many years of existence of this celebration, it was either canceled or reintroduced, and even today it is celebrated only in Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Albania, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Turkey, and Kazakhstan. But the Arabs do not celebrate Nowruz at all. But the duration of the holiday is different in each country. In some states it is celebrated from March 21 to 23, and in others even for 6 days, that is, from the 21st to the 27th. In these countries, Nowruz is one of the most popular holidays and is revered not only as a day of spring, but also as the New Year.

Traditions of Nowruz

According to legends, Nowruz must be spent having fun and, as is the case in many countries, it is believed that work is not allowed. On the night of the 20th to the 21st, Muslims gather with their whole family and begin their celebration. Moreover, according to popular belief, if you spend this day outside the house, you will not see it at all for the whole year, and therefore they used to try not to leave their home and have fun with their relatives. In addition to traditional sweets (shekerbura, baklava, badamburoy, gogal) and pilaf, there are seven dishes that begin with the letter “s” (sabzi, semenya, sked, sumac, sirke, etc.)

Baraat Night 2017 – May 11

It is a holy night in Muslim culture and is celebrated in the Hijri month of Sha'ban. Days 14 and 15 are considered turning points when it is necessary to pray and fast.

Date of the holiday: Holy Night of Baraat

Every year it is different and is determined quite simply - for Muslims it is always the night from the 14th to the 15th of the month of Sha'ban. In 2017, Baraat Night is celebrated on May 11th. This day is not only a symbol of goodness and philanthropy, but also a holiday of forgiveness of sins, correction and purification.

Traditions on Baraat Night

Muslims pray all night for the forgiveness of sins, and in the morning they perform the ritual of ablution. They prepare for this day carefully - they wash their clothes white, or simply buy new white ones, clean the house, wash everything and get rid of trash. And after the ritual of ablution, they put on clean clothes and go to breakfast, where the head of the family says a prayer. In this case, the table must be low and it is called dastarkhan. Also, if on some day a Muslim missed any prayer or prayer, he can perform it that night. It is imperative to spend time analyzing the whole year, drawing conclusions from your actions and the actions of other people. For example, in some it is customary to eat food as always, but in others, on the contrary, to abstain completely, and still others, perhaps, try to simply eat vegetable dietary dishes. However, they are united by one tradition that is observed everywhere. After sunset, every Muslim family sets a rich table with an abundance of meat and fish dishes, and be sure to invite relatives and close friends. Hands are washed before and after the meal, and guests are given a special bowl of water to perform this ritual. Before starting dinner, Muslims say: “O Allah, bless this food and save us from hell.” But at the end: “Thanks be to Allah, who sent us food and drink and made us Muslims.” Only the head of the family and the owner of the house should start the meal, and then everyone else.

Arafah Day (Arafat Day) is a Muslim holiday that has been known since ancient times.

When is Mount Arafat Day 2020 celebrated?

The date of celebration falls on the 9th day of the 12th month of the Muslim lunar calendar of Zulhija. This holiday is celebrated approximately 70 days after the end of Ramadan. In 2020, Mount Arafat Day falls on July 30, and it will begin on the eve of this day immediately after sunset.

Traditions of the Day of Arafah

The holiday traditions are as follows. The Day of Araf is the most memorable day of Allah. On Mount Arafat Day, Hajj pilgrims visit Mount Arafat near Mecca and perform prayer at its foot. According to legend, it was on Mount Arafat that Adam and Eve met after being expelled from paradise.

The journey from Mecca to Mount Arafat takes seven hours and must be done on foot. Standing on Arafat is the main part of the Hajj, without it the Hajj is invalid. Here the blessings and mercies of Allah are sent down, which are not sent down anywhere else and never.

On the Day of Arafah, dressed in festive ritual clothes, Muslims pray, ask for forgiveness for the sins they have committed before and turn to the Almighty with the following words: “Here I am before You, Lord! There is no one equal to You! Here I am in front of You! Truly praise be to You, mercy and power! There is no equal to You!

Fasting on the Day of Arafah

On Mount Arafat Day, Muslims also fast. Only sick people and travelers can avoid fasting. About fasting on the Day of Arafah, the Prophet Muhammad said: “This is the cleansing of sins for the previous and subsequent year.” Thus, Uraza on this day can become for a believer the atonement of sins for two years.

This holiday is especially important for Muslims, as it is believed that the reward or punishment for good or sinful deeds committed on this day increases many times over. Before sunset, believers atone for their sins.

But sins before people will be washed away only after the offender asks for forgiveness from those whom he offended. Muslims should also perform good deeds on the day of the holiday.

It remains to be said that the Day of Standing on Mount Arafat precedes the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

They are happy for the pilgrims and hope to soon be in their place themselves. Be that as it may, the Day of Arafat (“Yaumul-Arafa” in Arabic) is desired and long-awaited throughout the Muslim world. But why?

Ancient Witness

Mount Arafat (Jabal ar-Rahma, Mount of Mercy) is located in Saudi Arabia. This is a small 70-meter hill 20 km from Mecca. It was there that the happy reunion of Adam and Havva took place after their overthrow from Paradise and a long separation on Earth.

Here the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered his farewell sermon. Then thousands of believers confirmed that he had fulfilled the mission entrusted to him and conveyed the message of the Almighty.

And finally, Mount Arafat is the place where standing on the 9th of the month of Dhul-Hijjah is the culmination of the Hajj.

Advantages of Yaumul-Arafa

According to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Arafat day- one of the best in which the sun rises. On this day, Allah “perfected His religion and completed His mercy” (5:3). At Yaumul Arafa, He frees many more of His slaves from the fire than at other times. Any good deed is multiplied many times over and prayer on the day of Arafat is considered the best.

For those on Hajj

“Guests of Allah” should remember that standing on Mount Arafat is one of the main pillars of the great pilgrimage. If, due to inattention, error or forgetfulness, a person finds himself outside the specified territory, he is considered to have not completed the Hajj. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Hajj is standing on Mount Arafat.” Therefore, it is necessary to be vigilant and pay attention to special signs around the Arafat area.

Pilgrims arrive at the Mount of Mercy at lunchtime and connect Zuhr with Asr. After prayer until sunset, they turn to the Almighty with humble prayers. Their faces are concentrated, there are tears in their eyes. Rich and poor, white and black, young and old - all in the simple white robe of ihram, with their hands raised upward, dusty and humble. They forgot about the worldly for a while, turning to the Creator, each in their own language, about their own business... And Allah is proud of them, saying to the angels: “Look at My slaves with disheveled hair and covered with dust.” It is not for nothing that Satan is humiliated and weak on this day as never before: from the boundless mercy and forgiveness of Allah to Muslims.

For those at home

In Yaumul Arafa, all believers have the opportunity to earn the pleasure of the Lord. After all, just one day of voluntary fasting on the day of Arafat for those who do not perform the Hajj serves as atonement for sins for two years: past and future (Muslim). A kind word, alms, remembrance of Allah, reading the Koran, even a smile - any good deed will be multiplied. Don’t miss this opportunity, treat the day of worship and forgiveness with all your attention!

Twenty kilometers from the city of Mecca stands the sacred Mount Arafat, where Muslim pilgrims from all over the globe converge. According to the Holy Scriptures, it was in this place, after being expelled from paradise, that the first man Adam and the first woman Havva met, sent by God to different ends of the earth, where they got to know each other.

Now Muslims come to Arafat to perform their religious duty. Arafat is the extreme point of the Hajj - one of the five pillars of Islam. Hajj is a pilgrimage to the holy land of Mecca, considered the best deed for every believer in Islam.

What date is Arafat Day in 2017?

Arafat Day or Arafah is a holiday established in honor of Allah, celebrated on the ninth day of the last calendar month of the Muslim calendar of Zulhija. In 2017 according to the Gregorian style Arafat falls on August 31st.

Traditions of Arafat Day

It is believed that on this day there is an opportunity to influence one’s destiny. The fact is that on the Day of Arafah, all good deeds done not for selfish purposes are multiplied tenfold in heaven. The same thing happens with bad deeds - those who have bad thoughts and act not according to their conscience and contrary to the Koran will definitely pay for it in the judgment carried out on the Day of Arafah, tenfold aggravated by even a single bad deed. Precisely because on this day you can earn special favor from Allah, many pilgrims try to complete the pilgrimage by the specified date and make a sacrifice to their beloved God on the sacred mountain, so that this will be credited to him to the highest degree (see).

How to perform Hajj

Not everyone can make the pilgrimage. A number of conditions must be met.

1. Only a person who is over 18 years old can go on a hike to the sacred mountain.

2. As a rule, pilgrims are already elderly people who have sufficient funds both for the journey itself and so that the family does not need anything during the absence of the owner.

3. If a woman wants to perform the Hajj, she should take a guide. In the Muslim religion, women are prohibited from making such journeys alone.

4. Well, and the last, the most natural of all conditions is to be a Muslim. Representatives of other religions or philosophical teachings may simply not be allowed into Mecca. For Muslims, observing the Hajj is a sacred duty, which should not be desecrated by ordinary curiosity.

The Day of Arafah is the most memorable of Allah's days. For performing good deeds at this time, the reward increases many times over. Just like the weight of sins on this day increases several times. Before sunset you need to stand and atone for your sins. Saudi Arabia claims that these mass rituals are visible even from space.

Whatever pious deed a person does, seeking Allah with pure intention, on the Day of Judgment he will undoubtedly see its reward. The most important of those actions that bring believers closer to Allah is fasting on the day of Arafah. The Prophet was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah. And he replied: “This is the cleansing of sins for the previous and subsequent year.”

To perform Hajj there are a number of mandatory conditions:
1) you must reach adulthood;
2) be mentally healthy;
3) be a Muslim;
4) be free;
5) have enough funds to provide for your pilgrimage and support for your family left at home;
6) realize and not deny the obligation of the Hajj;
7) leave on the road in advance in order to be in time for the start of the Hajj.

In addition to the above conditions, there are other conditions for performing the Hajj:
1) good health;
2) the absence of obstacles to the pilgrimage (for example, being under criminal investigation);
3) ensuring travel safety;
4) the woman has an accompanying person.

When performing Hajj, a Muslim is obliged to perform the following rituals:
1) put on the robes of a pilgrim, which marks entry into a state of physical and spiritual purity;
2) make the first circumambulation around the Kaaba (the main Muslim shrine, towards which Muslims turn during prayer);
3) stand in the Arafat Valley, offering prayers to the Almighty;
4) make a second (farewell) tour around the Kaaba after standing in the Arafat Valley.

After putting on ritual clothes, a Muslim prays and turns to the Almighty with the following words: “Here I am before You, Lord! There is no one equal to You! Here I am in front of You! Truly praise be to You, mercy and power! There is no equal to You!

While the pilgrim is in a state of ritual purity, he is prohibited from certain actions that could invalidate the hajj. For example, trading, marital relations, smoking, etc.

Today is February 22

This holiday was established... congratulations

The tradition of celebrating his birthday dates back to 1778, when two years passed after the proclamation... congratulate

  • Saint Tikhon (in the world Vasily Ivanovich Belavin) was born in 1865 in the village of Klin, Toropetsky district, Pskov diocese, in the family of a priest who from an early age took his son with him to services, and love for the temple became an integral part of his life. Tikhon received his education at theological school...

Flora and Laurus, early Christian martyrs who lived and suffered in the 2nd century in the Roman province of Illaric (in the territory of modern Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina), are revered by both Orthodox and Catholics.

The historical documents on which the compiler of their lives relied have not reached our time. The hagiographer reports that these two brothers were originally from Byzantium and came to Illarik in search of work. The local ruler Lykion sent them as skilled stonemasons to build a pagan temple, where they, being Christians, behaved strangely, to put it mildly: they worked well, but distributed the money they earned to the poor, they themselves fasted and constantly prayed, and when the son of a local priest got hit in the eye a fragment of a stone, took him home and cured him, at the same time converting both him and his father to Christianity.

When the temple was built, the brothers gathered all the Christians working at the construction site, and together they installed a cross in the eastern part of the sanctuary and stood there in prayer the whole night. Retribution was not long in coming: the local ruler sentenced the former priest and his son, and 300 other Christians, to be burned, and sent Flora and Laurus, as the instigators, to trial before Lykion, who ordered them to be thrown into an empty well and covered with earth.

Many years later, the relics of Florus and Laurus were discovered and transferred to Constantinople - in 1200 they were seen there by the Novgorod pilgrim Anthony, and in 1350 by Stefan Novgorod.

According to oral folk tradition, with the discovery of the relics of these holy martyrs, the loss of livestock stopped. This is where their veneration as patrons of horses came from. Perhaps this tradition came to Rus' from the Balkans, where an oral legend developed about how Archangel Michael taught Florus and Laurus to control horses and understand “their language.” This legend was so popular that even in ancient icon painting originals (instructions for icon painters) there is an instruction that Saints Florus and Laurus should be painted with horses - such icons are still found in Orthodox churches.

Thanks to the connection between these saints and horses that arose in the popular consciousness - the basis of the life of peasant Russia - the martyrs Florus and Laurus were extremely popular, and the day of their memory throughout the country was celebrated as a “horse holiday”, when horses were supposed to be cared for and cherished and could not be used for work. In Moscow, on Myasnitskaya Street, opposite the Post Office, on this day a free exhibition of Oryol trotters was held, before the opening of which a special prayer service was held in the Frolov Church nearby.

Day of Arafah (Day of Standing on Mount Arafat)

The ninth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah is the pre-holiday day. On this day, pilgrims performing the Hajj stand on Mount Arafat (without standing on it on this day, the Hajj is invalid), and all other devout Muslims fast - after all, for performing good deeds (and fasting is the most important of them) on this day, according to according to the word of the Prophet Muhammad, sins “for the previous and subsequent years” will be washed away.

Araf in Islam is the space between hell and heaven, the fate of its inhabitants can change for both the better and the worse. And Mount Arafat is the place where Adam and Havva, who were expelled from paradise to different places after the Fall, met and recognized each other.

Great sins are washed away here, which can never be washed away anywhere else. And there is no person more stupid and unhappy than the one who spends this day carelessly - looking for food, talking, or doing other unnecessary and harmful things. After all, this is the time when even those who deserve it are freed from hell, when the poor, the rich, the king, the slave, the Arab, the white, the black - all without distinction, dressed in the same white ihrams with bare heads, putting their hands forward, ask Allah for the remission of sins , and there is no greater equality in the world.

On the Day of Araf, pilgrims must listen to the khutbah (teaching), and then, in the Myazdalazha mosque, evening prayers. Then they can rightfully be called “hajis”.

The beginning of the Muslim calendar is associated with one of the most important events in the history of Islam - the Hijra, that is, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. After a two-week journey, on September 21, 622, he and his companions entered the borders of Medina. The beginning of the lunar year, that is, the 2nd day of the month of Muharram, coincided with July 16 that year. It is from this day that most professing Islam count a new era for Muslims - from the Hijra of the Messenger of Allah. Holidays in Islam are sacred months, days and nights, which are indicated by the Almighty through his Messenger Muhammad, peace be upon him, as a special mercy of Allah, giving every Muslim the opportunity to increase good deeds in order to succeed in the Hereafter.

The Muslim lunar calendar consists of 12 months, each of which lasts from one new moon to the next, namely 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes 3.8 seconds, so some months have 29 days and others have 30. Thus, a lunar year consists of 354 days, which is 11 days shorter than the solar one. This explains the annual shift of the Muslim lunar calendar in relation to the solar calendar by 11 days ahead.

The main holidays in Islam are the Feast of Sacrifice (Kurban Bayram, Eid al-Adha) and the Feast of Breaking the Fast (Uraza Bayram, Eid al-Fitr). The holy nights Laylat al-Qadr, Laylat al-Bara'at, Laylat al-Miraj, Laylat al-Ragaib are marked with special service; holy days Arafah Day, Ashura Day, holy months Muharram, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Dhul-Hijjah .
